The Gift of the Holy Spirit
Before Jesus finished His earthly call and ascended to the right hand of the Father in heaven He gave specific instructions to all His disciples (not just the twelve) to wait for the Helper.
Acts 1:4-9 says "All those that call upon the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of sins are qualified to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
"But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8 NKJV)
When the Holy Spirit infills us we are enabled to pray in the Spirit. These are Spirit led prayers that include but are not limited to, speaking with new tongues.
"And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;" (Mark 16:17 NKJV)
There are many applications and evidences of tongues in the New Testament and in operation among believers today. This heavenly language was given by the Holy Spirit as evidence of Jesus indwelling presence and power in men.
The Bible tells us that when we speak with new tongues we are speaking to God. It is the Spirit of God praying through us - showing us mysteries. Answering questions, solving problems. These prayers are also noted to be the perfect prayers, as there is none that knows our heart better than God and not even we ourselves know how to pray perfect prayers in the limits of our human understanding. We are praying what God wants us to pray. His perfect will being revealed to us and birthed to bring change into our lives. Plans of God unfolding in our spirit man. Speaking to God. Forming our world with the words that come out of our mouths. Words of earth and words of heaven create our future. How much better are the words of heaven! Praying in tongues is the opening to a deeper relationship with our Heavenly Father.
"He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself;" (1 Corinthians 14:4 NKJV)
When we need spiritual edification this is the fastest way to receive it. It builds us up, recharges our spirit, and develops our maturity. It is establishing our solid foundation. Speaking in tongues brings strength and understanding to our spirit man.
Another purpose of this wonderful gift is the assurance of the Lord actively involved in our daily lives. The guidance of the Holy Spirit being released to our spirit as we are into all truth. The Holy Spirit takes hold together with us against our weaknesses and infirmities. We are not alone in our problems; we are partnered with the power of the Godhead in bringing God's solutions and answers into manifestation in our lives.
Praying in other tongues is the will of the Father for all believers. There is no evidence in God's Word that this gift was taken back by God or stopped in its operation over the course of time.
"But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified." (John 7:39 NKJV) "
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you." (John 14:26 NKJV)
"But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit." (Jude 1:20 NKJV) This power charge from heaven is essential to our faith walk. "For without faith it is impossible to please God." Our faith comes by hearing the Word of God but we build ourselves up ON this faith when we pray in tongues.
As we grow up spiritually we see our need for greater depths of holiness and purity. As we pray in tongues the Holy Spirit exposes our fleshly weaknesses and compromises to us so it can be purged from our lives. Preparing the glorious church, without spot or wrinkle is one of the functions of the Holy Spirit.
"Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you." (John 16:7 NKJV)
"And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. Of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged." (John 16:9-11 NKJV)
"I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you." (John 16:12-14 NKJV)
As we yield to the Holy Spirit and pray in tongues we bring praise to God as we obey His Word. We intercede for others and pray for unknown situations to our natural mind. We bring ourselves into refreshing. We help our spirit man to be more sensitive to sin. We stimulate our faith. We pray the perfect prayer. We are flowing with God. We understand the hidden things.
There is a simple reason why so many churches today disregard the scriptural teachings on speaking in tongues. Satan knows the tremendous power available through this gift to help believers when they receive the revelation of this gift. He has attempted through the ages to mock this gift; to minimize its importance; to make it seem foolish; to convince that it ended with the original twelve disciples.
When the Body of Christ walks into the light of this powerhouse of tongues, we will see the church readied to fulfill the divine call of God - a church that is pure and holy. Without spot or wrinkle. For without the power of the Holy Spirit, as yielded to when we speak with tongues, any spiritual housecleaning is limited to the flesh and the will. There is a much more effective way than most believers realize. The time is now for this revelation to be taught to the ends of the earth. We cannot survive these end times without the use of this gift in operation in our families and churches.
To receive this gift, just acknowledge your desire for it. Yield your tongue and your words to the Holy Spirit, just as you yield your hands to Him when you lay them on someone for healing. We expect to receive when we pray. We receive this gift as an act of faith in God's Word and in His provision. When you say "yes Lord - fill me" and open your mouth in praises to Him, you will be endued with power from on high as the Holy Spirit comes upon you and bears witness with your spirit that you are the sons and daughters of the living God! Don't try to make anything happen - this is a spiritual experience not a fleshly one. Depend on God to get His gift to you and you will find yourself in delight and rest more than you have ever before experienced!
